Having your furry friend by your side makes everything a little better.
But, traveling with Fido or Fifi can add to the stress.
Will Fido have an upset stomach?
Will Fifi get along with Grandma’s cat?
Here are a few tips to help ease the stress of holiday travel with your pet.
Tip #1 – Search Early for Pet-Friendly Travel and Lodging
Pet-friendly motels get booked up quickly.
And, spacious airplane seats can vary in price depending on the day.
Do yourself a favor: book early!
The earlier you purchase hotel rooms and airline tickets, the better your chances are of finding exactly what you need at the right price.
Purchase an Extra Plane Seat if Necessary
Measure the dimensions of your pet’s carrier.
Will it fit under an airplane seat?
If Fido is too big to fit in a small carrier, you may have to purchase an extra seat.
Don’t get stuck at the airport – or on the plane! – without enough room for your furry friend.
Notify the Rental Car Company Ahead of Time if You’re Driving with Miss Fifi
Many car rental companies won’t allow pets.
Find a pet-friendly rental company, or one allowing you to bring Fifi for an extra fee. You may also find out if your pet is prone to motion sickness so you can be prepared.
Book early, as pet-friendly options disappear quickly.
Tip #2 – Brush Up on Basic Obedience Training Before Visiting Family and Friends
If Fido isn’t allowed on the furniture at Grandma’s house, make sure Fido knows“down” and“stay.”
Make sure Fido won’t jump on small children or take toys not belonging to him.
If your pet is well behaved, expect a return invitation to follow!
Tip #3 – Keep Holiday Plants and Foods Away From Fido or Fifi
Since Fido may be extra curious of his surroundings in a new environment, dog- or cat-proof the new home upon arrival.
Pet-proofing includes:
- Removing toys off the floor (Fido may think they’re for him!).
- Lifting cords or wires off the floor.
- Closing doors to rooms Fido isn’t allowed.
Fido and Fifi also need protection from plants, such as poinsettias, which are poisonous to pets.
Make sure family members, especially children, know which foods Fido can and cannot have.
Keep Fido or Fifi occupied by bringing his or her favorite toy.
For example, keep pets away from:
- Alcohol
- Chocolate
- High-fat and high-salt foods like ham, bacon, sausage
- Sweets such as cookies, cakes, or candy.
Tip #4 – Make Sure Fido’s ID Tags and Vet Records are Current
Family homes are chaotic around the holidays.
Doors open and close as guests arrive, leaving Fido at risk of getting out.
Make sure Fido’s ID tags are up to date with your phone number.
Also, in case Fido does get into something he’s not supposed to, have veterinary records on hand.
Arriving prepared can mean the difference between an all-night stay at the emergency vet and a brief visit.
Tip #5 – Keep Your Pet Safe and Comfortable During Travel
Fifi is safest in a proper car seat or safety harness while traveling in a car.
If the driver needs to stop short, Fifi will remain secure.
Bring Natural Anxiety Cures
Lavender essential oil is excellent for relieving anxiety in dogs.
However, use precaution and talk to your veterinarian before using essential oils around cats.
Some essential oils are toxic to cats.
Bring your pets’ favorite toys, blankets, or bedding to keep Fido and Fifi calm on long trips.
