Chronic Dog Vomiting
Vomiting is considered chronic when it persists longer than a few days.
The vomiting may wax and wane, but if chronic, it persists overall for a long period of time.
You should see your veterinarian for vomiting that persists for more than a few days even if your dog seems otherwise healthy.
Causes of Chronic Dog Vomiting
There are many causes of chronic vomiting in dogs.
Some of the most common include:
- Bacterial infection
- Foreign body
- Gastritis
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Neoplasia
- Pancreatitis
- Toxicity
- Viral infection
Of course, only your veterinarian can diagnose chronic vomiting and rule out other diseases and health problems.
Most veterinarians recommend bloodwork and radiography for the first round of diagnosing.
If answers are still not obtained, your vet might recommend an endoscopy with or without biopsy for a definitive diagnosis.
Some vets also use ultrasound.
Western Treatments for Chronic Dog Vomiting
Treatments vary depending on exactly what is going on with your dog.
If your dog is dehydrated, your vet will probably recommend fluid therapy to rehydrate.
Intestinal bacterial overgrowths require antibiotics.
Western medicine usually treats inflammatory bowel disease with steroids.
Some vets recommend anti-emetic and acid-reducing pharmaceuticals to keep dogs from vomiting.
However, pharmaceuticals only treat the symptoms of vomiting, not the root cause.
TCVM Philosophy on Chronic Dog Vomiting
In TCVM (Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine), chronic vomiting is considered a middle burner Qi flow disorder.
According to Chinese theory, in a healthy dog, Stomach Qi moves downward and Spleen Qi moves upward.
Chronically vomiting dogs usually have some form of Spleen and Stomach Qi flow problem.
Spleen Qi Deficiency with the stagnation of Damp and/or food causes of Spleen and Stomach Qi flow disorders.
Dogs with Spleen Qi Deficiency with stagnation often:
- Have variable appetite
- Have weak abdominal muscles
- Suffer fatigue
- Suffer sluggish digestion
- Vomit food after eating
- Vomit water and/or mucous
The Eastern method to treat chronic vomiting is to tonify Spleen Qi, move Stomach Qi downward, and relieve stagnation of food and/or dampness.
How Happy Earth Curbs Chronic Dog Vomiting
Happy Earth is a TCVM blend of 10 Eastern herbs.
The herbs work together to rebalance your dog energetically at the root cause.

TCVM-trained veterinarians examine dogs differently than regular veterinarians do.
They understand that the root cause of health issues may be in different areas of the body than symptoms.
Health problems are caused by energetic disharmonies and can show up in totally unrelated areas of the body.
TCVM vets use different types of pulse testing, tongue testing, and more to accurately diagnose your dog’s energy patterns.
